New Pipeline Inspection Service from PMI Denholm - The 'GUL'
‘GUL’ is an innovative pipe screening system which allows extensive lengths of pipes, in difficult to access areas, to be rapidly screened for corrosion or defects. It provides a method of rapid, efficient diagnostics and consequently speedy repair.
The GUL uses a technique know as ‘guided wave inspection’ which works by looking for reflections from changes in cross section of the pipe. This is very different from other more conventional inspection techniques. Rather than scanning the region directly below or near to the transducers, the guided waves travel down the length of the pipe which allows up to 160 meters of pipe to be inspected from a single location.
Some major advantages of the technique include:-
- Conducting the inspection without removing the pipe from service. Tests can even be performed at elevated temperatures (normally up to 120 degrees centigrade, but even this has the scope to be extended).
- The entire volume of the pipe is inspected, both internally and externally, whereas other techniques only sample at spot locations.
- No surface preparation is required.
- A very satisfied client.
